The Kraka-to-Dan-Swift Challenge

The DAN SWIFT, originally built as the cable laying ship KRAKA, is under current conversion at Blohm + Voss Repair. She will be converted to a versatile Accommodation and Support Vessel (ASV) for Lauritzen Tankers’ operations in the deep water oil production industry.

The challenging assignment includes equipping the vessel with a dynamic positioning system which automatically maintains positions and headings alongside offshore structures by using own propellers and thrusters. Technical upgrading work includes the installation of three additional thrusters, the conversion to a dieselelectric propulsion system and building a new bridge and installing computer systems. Shipbuilding work includes adding a helicopter pad, a new multipurpose crane at the stern and the installation of two independent telescopic gangways which can rapidly disconnect from offshore structures in the face of adverse weather and/or emergencies.

New hotel/human facilities include accommodation of additional 300 berths, changing rooms, a sick-bay, offices, workshops, a cinema and a gymnasium.
